Rabat - King Mohammed VI has granted his royal pardon to 638 people convicted by various courts across Morocco.
The royal pardon comes on the occasion of Eid Al Mawlid.
The beneficiaries of the pardon include 481 who are in detention, the Ministry of Justice said.
The list includes25 inmates, who have benefited from full pardon over the remaining prison term or confinement. About 453 inmates had their prison terms reduced.
According to the statement, three inmates had their life sentences commuted to fixed-term sentences.
The beneficiaries of the pardon who are not in detention include 157 inmate.
The list includes 39 individuals who benefited from pardon over their prison term or its remainder.
About 10 individuals had their prison terms pardoned and their fines maintained.
In addition, 100 individuals had their fines annulled, while eight individuals had both their prison terms pardoned and their fines annulled.
Royal pardon is customary in Morocco to mark national and religious holidays.
This evening, the King chaired a religious event.
On this occasion, Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, delivered a speech before the King in which he reviewed the activities of the Supreme Council of Ulema and local Ulema Councils.
Following the speech, Toufiq handed over to the sovereign the report relating to these activities.
In his speech, the minister indicated that the institution of the Ulema is "one of the levers enabling Imarat Al-Mouminine to accomplish its mission in terms of protecting religion," noting that the action of this institution has focused, over the last two decades, on preserving the constants and supervising the exercise of religious worship.
