Meet the New Ministers of Education, Higher Education

Actualités Maroc
Rabat - As part of the recent government reshuffle confirmed by King Mohammed VI, the new Ministers of Education and Higher Education have been revealed.

Mohamed Saad Berrada will take over the Education Ministry, succeeding Minister Chakib Benmoussa who was appointed by King Mohammed VI to lead the High Commission for Planning.

Berrasa is a member of the Political Bureau of the political bureau of the Rally of Independents (RNI).

The change in the Ministry of Education comes amid growing concerns about the state of the education sector, with numerous alarming reports highlighting significant deficiencies in learning levels among students, especially young pupils.

According to a 2022 report from the World Bank, an average of 70% of children under the age of 10 in MENA are unable to read a simple text.

In Morocco, the figure stands at 64.9%.

The reshuffle also comes amid strikes among medical students, who have been protesting and striking against reforms like reducing education years from seven to six years.

As part of the government reshuffle, King Mohammed VI also replaced Abdellatif Miraoui with Azzedine El Midaoui, who took over the Ministry of Higher Education.

El Midaoui has been President of the Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra since 2014 and President of the Conference of University Presidents since 2015.

He also has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences since 2015 and the higher Council for Education since 2014.

El Midaoui has also been responsible for 34 research contracts and agreements and received the Ministry of Education’s Competitiveness Award in 2008.
